Lee Trevino is a legend unto himself. Born in Dallas, Texas in 1939, Lee’s future didn’t seem to lean towards becoming a golf pro. He began working in the fields at a young age and by age eight was working as a caddy at the local golf course to pick up extra money. Because of the long work hours, Lee was not able to attend school regularly and finally quit school at age 14 to become a full time caddy.
Lee practiced his golf whenever he could during the next few years but with no long term advancement available to him he decided to join the Marines at age 17. While in the Marines, Lee played golf regularly and continued to improve his irregular style.
When Lee ended his term in the Marines he became a club professional but did not enter the PGA Pro tour till 1967. He ended his first year by being named Rookie of the Year by Golf Digest -- not bad for the man with the unconventional swing and non-stop chatter.
During his illustrious career Lee won six majors, as well as 23 other PGA tour wins giving the other golfers a run for their money. Lee has gone on to win his fair share of Senior Tour wins. His interaction with himself, the ball and the gallery make him a fan favorite and has helped the senior tour become popular.
Lee’s incorrect swing and stance have always set him apart. His Mexican background set him apart. His attitude and humor set him apart. But all these things combined to make one great golfer.
